And Borthwick-Jackson adds he had some “negative experiences” during an injury-blighted stay at the club.

The former academy man, 23, was one of nine players released by United last week.

Joining Borthwick-Jackson out of the door are Aidan Barlow, Alex Fojticek, Ethan Hamilton, Dion Mcghee, Demetri Mitchell, Kieran O’Hara, Largie Ramazani and George Tanner.

However, all nine will be able to return to Carrington for pre-season training in order to build their fitness up and help find new clubs.

Borthwick-Jackson has now bid farewell to the Theatre of Dreams in an emotional social media post.

But he admits his time at the club wasn’t always good.

Borthwick-Jackson wrote: “After 17 years at the club, it’s time for me to leave Manchester United.

“Growing up as kid from Manchester, all I wanted to do was play for United.

“To make my debut for the club I grew up supporting was a dream come true and a day that will stay in my heart forever.

“I’ve had some great experiences, made some great friends and had the opportunity to play with/against great players.

“To that I owe a huge amount of gratitude to those members of the club who believed in me.

“Likewise I’ve had many negative experiences which in turn have become lessons, especially in recent years.

“It’s revealed some truths in football most people won’t ever see (in due time).

“Lastly I’d like to say a big thank you to all the fans who have support me and those who still continued to do so. I appreciate you.

“I’m looking forward to a new chapter that awaits me, wherever it may be.”

Borthwick-Jackson started his career at United in 2003 and made his first-team debut in November 2015 against West Brom.

He ended up making ten Premier League appearances that term, and was crowned U21 Player of the Year in 2016.

However, Borthwick-Jackson was loaned to Wolves the following season, making just six Championship appearances.

He joined Leeds the following year but his progress was even worse there with just one game in English football’s second division.

Borthwick-Jackson then dropped into League One with a loan move at Scunthorpe United in 2018, playing 33 times in all competitions.

Last summer saw him undergo a trial at Dutch side SC Heerenveen, but they opted against a move.

Borthwick-Jackson spent the first half of this season at Tranmere Rovers, where he made just three League One appearances.

He then joined League Two side Oldham in January and played in six games before coronavirus ended their domestic season.
