Kanye West faces uphill battle to even get on November ballot making ‘run for president’ nearly impossible

- Advertisment -

KANYE West again announced his intention to run for president of the United States on Saturday, but at this point in the 2020 election cycle – he may not even be able to get on the ballot.

West announced his plans on Twitter on the Fourth of July.

Getting himself on the ballot will not be easy if West actually plans to run in the 2020 election[/caption]

“We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future,” the rapper wrote. “I am running for president of the United States #2020VISION.”

Those close to West seemed to throw in their support, with his wife Kim Kardashian West retweeting his post with an added American flag emoji, and his buddy Elon Musk sharing that West has his “full support.”

Support from well-known friends and family aside, getting on the ballot for an election that is a mere four months away is easier said than done. In fact, it may be impossible for West to get on the ballot in several states.

West didn’t say whether he planned to run as a Democrat or a Republican, though it’s unlikely that he would unseat either the current Republican President Donald Trump or the likely Democratic nominee Joe Biden. If he’s planning to run as an Independent, it’s already too late for him to file as one in six states, including Indiana, Maine, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina and Texas, according to Business Insider.

West may attempt to run as a write-in candidate, but even that has its challenges[/caption]

Aside from the missed deadlines, running as an independent comes with additional hurdles West would have to clear in the coming weeks.

“An independent presidential candidate must petition for placement on the general election ballot in all 50 states as well as Washington, D.C.,” according to Ballotpedia. “A handful of states may allow an independent candidate to pay a filing fee in lieu of submitting a petition. The methods for calculating how many signatures are required vary from state to state, as do the actual signature requirements.”

Even if West wants to be a write-in candidate, there are rules for that as well.

Thirty-three states “require a write-in presidential candidate to file some paperwork in advance of an election. In nine states, write-in voting for presidential candidates is not permitted,” according to Ballotpedia.

All signs point to a Kanye presidential run being a bit too late to be realistic. However, the rapper didn’t specifically say he planned to run in 2020 and may be planning to run for president in a later election.

Still, West has been teasing a presidential run in 2020 for years. Those rumors seemed to be quashed when West met with Trump at the Oval Office in 2018 donning a “Make America Great Again” hat.

West’s Saturday announcement leaves many wondering why he would decide to run against Trump, and whether the move may be an attempt to steal some votes from Biden.

Others suspect the move is a publicity stunt. The first single of West’s upcoming album God’s Country did drop this week.
