Democratic Senator Ed Markey co-sponsored the Monthly Economic Crisis Support Act with Harris.
“Give every person in our country $2000/month for the duration of the pandemic, $2000/month for 3 months after that, and $2000/month retroactive to March,” Markey, 74, tweeted Monday.
Ted Cruz, a Republican Senator from Texas and vocal supporter of President Donald Trump, was quick to mock Markey’s comments.
“Why be so cheap? Give everyone $1 million a day, every day, forever. And three soy lattes a day. And a foot massage. We have a magic money tree — we should use it!” he wrote.
The Monthly Economic Crisis Support Act was sponsored by Kamala Harris, one of Joe Biden’s veep frontrunners, as well as senators Bernie Sanders and Kirsten Gillibrand.
Harris made a “final pitch” for the $2,000 monthly stimulus checks before was slated to discuss the stimulus package in July.
Pols are currently working to hammer out a stimulus package with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin saying that a deal could be made this week.
“The president is determined to spend what we need to spend. … We’re prepared to put more money on the table,” Mnuchin told CNBC on Monday.
However, Mnuchin last week reportedly told Dem leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer “absolutely not” at their request Republicans pad their bill by $1trillion.
The Senate has delayed its recess to work out a deal, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told CNN earlier this month.
