HANNAH Calcino loves the bush and is on a mission to bring the best parts of life on the land into the urban jungle.

After living and working as a governess on an outback cattle station for 12 months, the Gold Coast teacher could not shake the red dust from her veins when she returned home.

Ever since, she has been showcasing all the wonderful things regional and rural Australia has to offer on her blog called The Urban Farmhouse.

“The platform is all about food, community and living an authentic lifestyle. I boldly want to bridge the rural-urban divide, bring some lessons from the bush into our own lifestyles — plus highlight the sacrifices made by those living on the land to keep Australia thriving.”

Ms Calcino, 24, said she was surprised Gold Coasters often did not understand where their food came from.

“Every family needs a farmer,” she said.

“Our choices as a consumer can influence producers, so we need to learn and be aware where our food comes from and make choices that support our agricultural industry.

“A great way to do this is by shopping local at markets, purchasing meat from butchers, choosing milk brands from local dairies, and reading the back of packets in supermarkets and choosing products that have been made in Australia using Australian ingredients.

“Also, buying from the bush this Christmas is such an easy way to support rural businesses.

For example, the dress I’m wearing in this photo was purchased from The Drawing Board in Blackall and my earrings are Anna Hall Designs in Tamworth.”
