2020 strikes again… this time it’s PowerBall – The Citizen – Bukipress

- Advertisment -

On Tuesday night, something most unusual happened in the PowerBall draw. On the other hand, this is the year 2020, so one shouldn’t be too surprised when something most unusual happens.

Nevertheless, most of the country must’ve raised a collective eyebrow at Tuesday night’s PowerBall winning numbers. And it wasn’t just at the eye-watering jackpot prize of R114 million, that’s for sure.

For the first time in South African Lotto history, a set of consecutive winning numbers came up, including the powerball. They were 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 – and the Powerball, 10.

What’s the chances of this happening?

About the same as a ruling party politician politely declining a multimillion-rand bribe, some might say.

Others might opine that it would be the same chance as former president Jacob Zuma arriving at any court or commission of inquiry without another cunning plan to delay, frustrate or postpone the administration of justice. (Although he keeps on telling his fans that he wants his day in court – this is 2020, he might just get it, and a lot more to boot. Like time behind bars, for instance.)

Or the same chance that anybody who had attended Affies in Pretoria, won’t tell you so the minute they can. Or the same chance as a dyed-in-the-wool Capetonian travelling to Joburg for a relaxing holiday, far away from the madding beaches, not to mention that hulking mountain and hipster coffee shops.

Might it be the same chance as Julius Malema inviting Pravin Gordhan for a braai and a sleepover at his place – and Pravin accepting, offering to bring a salad and a pudding? Or Steve Hofmeyr renewing his DStv subscription? Or perhaps the same chance as the Proteas winning the Cricket World Cup? Or Donald Trump and Helen Zille bidding goodbye to Twitter?

Don’t bet on it. The chances of getting consecutive winning numbers in a PowerBall set-up are far greater than any of the above scenerios.

However, this is 2020 – chances are the same thing will happen next week, or even this weekend.
