Where was Boris Johnson born?

Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson was born on 19 June 1964 in a hospital in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York.

He was born to 23-year-old Stanley Johnson, a Brit, who was studying economics at Columbia University, and 22-year-old Charlotte Fawcett, an Oxford-born artist.

The couple had married before moving to the US, where they lived opposite the Chelsea Hotel.

According to Sonia Purnell’s biography of Johnson, Just Boris: A Tale of Blonde Ambition, Stanley “considered it vital to secure dual US/British citizenship for their son”, so he was registered there.

When did he move to the UK?

In 1964, the family moved back to the UK, so that Charlotte could study at the University of Oxford.

Whilst in Oxford, the family lived in Summertown, a suburb of the city, and in 1965 Charlotte gave birth to daughter Rachel Johnson.

In July 1965, the family then relocated to Crouch End, in north London, and in February 1966, they relocated again, this time back to the States, where they settled in Washington DC.

Their move was prompted by Stanley securing a job at the World Bank.

In 1967, a third child, Leo, was born, and when Stanley secured employment with a policy panel on population control, the family moved again to Norwalk, Connecticut.

The family finally returned to the UK in 1969, where they settled in Somerset.

In 2015, Mr Johnson announced his intention to relinquish his US citizenship, which he finally did in 2016.

Could Boris Johnson become US president?

In 2006, Mr Johnson wrote a column for the Spectator, in which he said: “When the going has got tough in England it has sometimes crossed my mind that I could yet activate the Schwarzenegger option and flee to the land of opportunity, perhaps beginning as a short-order chef in Miami before winding up as Colorado senator and, inevitably, president.”

In 2012, in an interview with David Letterman, he doubled down on these claims, stating that he could “technically speaking” be US president.

Article II, Section 1 of the US Constitution stipulates three eligibility criteria for running for president of the United States. These are being a “natural born” US citizen; aged over 35, and living in the US for over 14 years.

There is nothing in the US constitution to stop a foreign leader becoming US head of state.
